Paper does not love you. Paper does not forgive you. Paper simply waits until somebody tries to tell the story wrong.

Then it speaks. And if I learned anything from the mountain house, it was that love without structure is just hope wearing expensive shoes. The structure is what held.

The rest was weather. If you had been standing in that driveway with me, seeing strangers tour the place nine days after my mother promised to treasure it forever, maybe you would have done exactly what I did. Maybe you would have burned the whole arrangement down.

Maybe you would have handed them the deed out of guilt and called it peace. I don’t know. I only know this: when I came around that last bend and saw the sign in the gravel, I thought for one sick, floating second that the worst part was going to be losing the house.

It wasn’t. The worst part was realizing how quickly some people can rename a gift once they think the paperwork is too far away to matter. The best part was discovering the paperwork had been there all along.

Nine days. They got nine days of fantasy. I got the deed.

And in the end, that made all the difference.
